Premarital

Marriage is one of the biggest choices you'll ever make. Premarital counselling isn't about fixing what's broken — it's about building something intentional, together.

The wedding gets all the attention, but it's the marriage — the day after, and the ten thousand days after that — that deserves the real preparation. Premarital counselling is a warm, structured space to have the conversations that are easy to keep putting off.

Who this is for

This is for couples who are engaged, planning to get engaged, or simply considering a long-term commitment. Whether you've been together three months or thirteen years, whether it's a first marriage or a re-partnering, premarital work meets you where you are.

What we might talk about

Together we'll explore the topics that tend to surface once the honeymoon phase settles — before they turn into recurring conflicts. Common themes include:

  • Communication styles, conflict repair, and how you each 'do' hard conversations
  • Money — how you each grew up with it, and how you'll share it
  • Family-of-origin patterns, in-law relationships, and boundaries
  • Values, faith, culture, and how each of you understands 'a good life'
  • Whether, when, and how to have (or not have) children
  • Careers, moves, and how you'll make big life decisions together
  • Intimacy, sex, and emotional connection over the long haul

My approach draws on ACT and person-centred care — warm, non-judgmental, and paced to what you both need. This is not a checklist. It's a chance to really see each other, on purpose.

FAQs

Common questions.

Are we going to uncover something bad about our relationship?+
The goal isn't to find problems — it's to build clarity and confidence. Most couples leave premarital sessions feeling closer, more prepared, and with new tools they'll use for the rest of their marriage.
How many sessions do we need?+
That's up to you. Some couples want a focused package of 4–6 sessions covering the essentials; others prefer a more open-ended arrangement. We'll talk about what fits during your free consult.
We're not religious. Is premarital counselling still for us?+
Yes. My practice is inclusive of all faiths and none. This is about your values as a couple, whatever they are.
Do you offer sessions in the evenings for busy schedules?+
I hold sessions Monday through Friday. During your free consult we'll find times that work for both of your schedules — online sessions in particular offer a lot of flexibility.
Can we do this online?+
Yes — many premarital couples prefer online sessions for the ease of scheduling. I offer secure online sessions Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and in-person in Tsawwassen on Tuesdays and Fridays.
