Family Strain

Family is where our deepest love and our deepest hurt often live in the same room. If the connection has frayed, there is a way back — even if the path looks different than you imagined.

Family strain rarely comes out of nowhere. It builds slowly — through unmet expectations, unspoken hurts, life changes, competing needs, and the accumulation of small moments that never got repaired. Whether you're navigating parent–adult child dynamics, sibling conflict, blended family adjustments, or in-law tension, you are welcome here.

You don't have to bring the whole family

Much of the meaningful work in family strain can happen with just one person in the room — you. As you shift your own patterns, boundaries, and understanding, the wider family system often shifts too. When it's appropriate and everyone consents, I can also work with two or more family members together.

What we might explore

  • Patterns of conflict, avoidance, or over-functioning you've fallen into
  • The invisible family 'rules' shaping how you show up
  • Grief for the relationships you wish you had
  • Boundaries that protect the relationship instead of ending it
  • Cultural, intergenerational, and neurodivergent dynamics at play
  • How to have hard conversations without escalating them

I bring warmth and no agenda about what your family 'should' look like. Together we'll figure out what a workable, values-aligned relationship with each family member can be — including, sometimes, choosing distance.

FAQs

Common questions.

Do I have to bring my family members with me?+
No. A great deal of family work can happen individually. If joint sessions would help, we can talk about that together and only proceed with everyone's consent.
My family member won't come to therapy. Can I still make progress?+
Yes. When one person in a system changes how they show up, the whole system starts to move. You can absolutely do meaningful family work on your own.
We're a blended family and things are tense. Can you help?+
Yes. Blended-family transitions come with unique layers — loyalty binds, differing parenting styles, and complicated grief. I approach this work with sensitivity to everyone involved.
What if I'm considering going low- or no-contact?+
This is a deeply personal decision, and my job is not to steer you toward or away from it. We'll explore it together with care, honesty, and a focus on what protects your wellbeing.
